Art Noveau Municipal House

INFORMATION & DETAILS
Address
Namesti Republiky 5, Prague 1
The Municipal House stands on the place of the former King’s Courtyard, the Royal residence in the city of Prague. Today, it is the best example of the Art Nouveau style in Prague. The Municipal House was built for the Citizen’s Association to house high-quality public and entertainment events. In 1905 two architects, Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka, were commissioned to build it. When finished in 1911, the best Czech artists, among which were Alfons Mucha, Mikoláš Aleš, Ladislav Šaloun, František Ženíšek and others, were commissioned to do the rich decoration of the interiors. Apart from many meeting rooms and saloons, there are also a number of restaurants – the French and the Czech Pilsner Restaurant – and two bars. In the American bar in the basement alcohol was firstly served to women in a public place. However, the most famous place in the Municipal House is the Smetana Concert Hall, which seats 2000 people. Apart from regular concerts, the most significant events taking place every year here are the classical music festivals Prague Spring and Prague Autumn.
